Tips for improving your health this summer!

It’s getting warmer slowly but surely, and we can finally start getting outside more. This is a great time to use the nice weather as an excuse to live healthier, so here are a few tips for improving your health this summer!

  1. Boost with Berries!

If you do one thing this summer to improve your diet, have a cup of mixed fresh berries — blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries — every day. They will help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of age-related illnesses. Blueberries and blackberries are especially antioxidant-rich.

A big bonus: Berries are also tops in fiber, which helps keep cholesterol low and may even help prevent some cancers.

  1. Play in the Dirt!

Start a small garden for flowers, herbs, vegetables, or whatever your heart desires. Cultivating this little piece of land will help improve your stress levels.

  1. Exercise Outside!

This one kind of goes without saying, but take advantage of beautiful warm sunny days. Walk around the neighborhood and get some fresh air!

  1. Protect Those Peepers!

The sun is bright and wearing sunglasses might be a regular thing for you. But you might be surprised to know that UV rays from the sun can hurt your eyes too because the can cause cataracts. So whenever you are outside in the sun, wear those sunglasses. Bonus: you will definitely look cool doing it.

  1. Go Light on the Alcohol

They say alcohol in moderation (defined as 1 to 2 drinks a day) can be good for your heart. For the summer, stay away from hard liquors and go towards the more refreshing ones like sangria, wine spritzers or a light beer. All of these will deliver the same benefits without the extra calories.

  1. Keep Your Sleep (Schedule)

Don’t let the long daylight hours keep you staying up! Keep a regular sleep schedule and aim for 8 hours a night. Your body will rest better when you keep the times to bed and to rise consistent and you avoid alcohol at least 3 hours before bedtime.

With these healthy tips, you’ll find you’ve improved not only your summer, but the rest of your year too with these great new habits!
