Summer Safety Tips!

Summertime means great weather and time to get outside and enjoy it! It also means the weather can get hot. Seniors are particularly susceptible to overheating. But there are some things you can do to limit problems when you are exposed to the heat.

  1. Drink Plenty of Water- This one goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway. Water is one of the best ways to keep yourself cool. Keep an insulated bottle with you and keep it full! When you are sweating, you risk getting dehydrated. Whether you are inside or outside, drinking plenty of water is not going to be a bad thing for you!
  2. Limit Strenuous Exercise- Your body works hard enough during the hot days that adding strenuous physical activity can be detrimental. If you exercise regularly, try it during the early morning or late evenings. Planning around the hottest time of the day can help to limit exposure to the heat and can be much easier on your body. Take regular breaks when possible if you have to work outdoors.
  3. Take Frequent Breaks- Have a cool area in your home in which to recover from the heat. And if that air conditioning goes out, call the repairman! Properly working cooling equipment helps you recover faster.

Your body works hard every day to maintain a normal temperature. Excessive heat forces your body to work harder than normal, which often is the root cause of heat-related illness. Essentially the heat forces your body to work beyond its limits. For senior citizens, this can be a dangerous – and even deadly – problem, so if you start feeling faint or dizzy and it doesn’t dissipate after an hour, it’s time to see a doctor.
